Alpacas are a curious and inquistive animal of a gentle nature and are primarly kept for their excellent fibre. There are two different types of alpaca, huacaya which has a dense crimpy coat and suri which has lustrous fibre draped in fine ringlets.
Caring for alpacas
Alpacas are easy and economical to keep they are however a herd animal who should never be kept alone. One acre is adequate for four to six alpacas with a supply of additional hay or hayledge and always a clean fresh water supply. They require a field shelter for protection from both sun and rain. Alpacas require regular toe nail trimming, worming twice a year and a vaccination against clostridial diseases.
Breeding
Alpacas are induced ovulators and therefore can be mated at any time of the year although crias (alpaca baby) thrive better if born in spring. The average gestation period is between 11 and 12 months, usually giving birth to a single offspring. Alpacas are easy birthers and generally give birth in daylight hours.
