About miniature donkeys
What are miniature donkeys
Miniature donkeys are gentle, affectionate and loving creatures. They love to play, be given attention and being taken for walks. Their life span is 25-40 years and their height is less than 36inches. A donkey is a herd animal and should never be kept alone.
Caring For Miniature Donkeys
Miniature Donkeys require a basic diet of good barley straw and hay, fresh water and a salt lick. Miniature donkeys are classed as easy keepers and therefore can easily gain weight, care should be taken that they do not get fat. They are very hardy animals however they do require a field shelter from the rain, sun and flies. Their feet need trimming every 8-12 weeks along with a good wormer 3-4 times a year.
Breeding
The gestation period for a miniature donkey is 11-13 months. They should not be breed untill they are at least three years of age and foals should never be weaned before six month of age. The reproductive cycle of a Jenny is on average 21-23 days long, it is made up of a 5-7 day in-heat cycle and a 14-17 day out of heat cycle. Miniature donkeys make wonderful mothers.
Miniature Donkey History
Miniature donkeys are native to mediteranian islands of Sardinia and Sicily where they were used as working animals, sadly they are now almost extinct in their native lands.
